In a life too short, Steve Newell played for the best. Steve started his softball career, at the A level, with Brown’s Masonry, in 1975. In 1976 he moved to the Portland Lakers and to AA level ball. 1977- 1984, he played for Ray
Bristow Co. which merged with the Portland Lakers. In 1985, with Portland Softball on the decline, he moved to Seattle Pay’n Pak. In his first year with the Seattle Club, they won the ASA AA National championship and Steve was MVP and 1st team All American. This was only the beginning, in 1986, Pay’n Pak not only won the ASA AA National Championship, but also won the ISC (International Softball Congress) Championship. Steve was 1st team All American in the ASA tournament and 2nd team All World in the ISC tournament. Pay’ n Pak also won the USA Olympic Festival that year and received Gold Medals, completing a “triple crown” year. At the Olympic
Festival, Steve was the leading hitter with an incredible .458 average and got the game winning hit in the championship game. In 1987, Steve was part of the Pay’n Pak team that again won the ASA National Championship and were Silver Medalists in the Pan Am games. Steve left the Seattle team after helping them win the ISC Championship, again, in 1990 and returned to Portland where he was a player and manager for the Portland Merchants until his untimely death in 1994.
