Ron was born and raised in Portland. A native Oregonian, Ron graduated from Parkrose High School, in 1964, where he excelled in the classroom and participated in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1968, he graduated from Oregon State University where he also excelled in the classroom as well as on the football field and the baseball diamond. Yes, Ron is a Beaver!!! Ron loves the game of softball, but his true loves are his wife Vickye, whom he met while attending Oregon State, their son Erik who lives in Gig Harbor, WA, with his wife Amanda. Ron and Vickye have four grandchildren, Jake, Hannah, Erika and Luke.
Ron started his career in Parks & Recreation right after graduating from Oregon State. In 1969, Ron went to work for the City of Portland Parks & Recreation Department. He started at the bottom as Recreation Leader and quickly worked his way up the ladder as a Recreation Instructor at the Level I and then the Level II classifications before finally reaching the top as the Sports Supervisor for the Portland Park & Recreation Department.
Ron was appointed Portland Metro ASA Commissioner in 1982. Prior to that, he had served under previous Portland Metro Commissioners, Charlie Walker, Bill Owens, and Paul Keenan. This had given him the opportunity to meet and get to know several of the other Northwest Region ASA Commissioners.
Ron’s involvement in ASA has been huge. He has served on numerous committees on the National ASA Council. He has represented ASA as the ASA Rep at several National Championship Tournaments. He has served as chairperson for the Region 15 Adult ASA Classification Committee since its inception and has also served as both assistant chairperson and chairperson of the National ASA Classification Committee.
