Mike began playing softball in the summer of 1982 when a friend introduced him to the game and invited him to join his team. The following season, Mike moved to Major Modified Fast Pitch which allowed him to compete at the highest level. In his first season at the Major Modified level, Mike's team qualified for the national tournament. In his second season at the Major Modified level, Mike's team, Off Broadway, finished in fifth place at the National Tournament in what would become the first of twelve top ten national finishes. In 1987, after three prior top five national finishes, Mike's team, Western Truck Brokers, won the National Major Modified Fast Pitch Championship. Over Mike's career he earned eight All-American awards as a center fielder, made 15 Nation Championship appearances, played an integral role in two National Championships and won four first team All-American awards.
