Rod's love for softball started over 50 years ago playing in a local Fast Pitch Church League in The Dalles, Oregon. Rod umpired his first softball games in Hood River, Oregon in the summer of 1964 in a league where you played a game then someone from your team had to call the next game. Rod umpired his first NW Regional Tournament in Spokane in 1982 which was a Men's Class A Slow Pitch Tournament. Rod went on to umpire his first National Tournament in Couer d'Alene in 1986, a JO Girl's 18U Slow Pitch Tournament. Rod credits the late Jerry Kenney for his success in umpiring. Jerry taught to love the game, respect the game and never cheat the game.
